In 2021, I started Project PeriodTalk after finding out that over half the female population in Kenya cannot afford menstrual products to care for their periods, despite being a basic human right. This did not sit right with me, so I chose to begin this charity to end period poverty and support menstrual equality and education.
After reading an article about period poverty in Kenya and hearing my mom’s own experience with not having access to period products and how women’s menstrual health wasn’t really talked about back home, I began to wonder how could something so natural for a women's body be seen as taboo and still be a struggle for women all over the world today.
I ended up going down a rabbit hole, researching more places across the world where girls, non-binary people and trans-men struggle with access to menstrual products, education and support. I found out that many girls in Kenya miss school or risk their health because they can’t afford or access safe menstrual products, which really hurt me.
As a girl who's in school and has access to sanitary products, I could not imagine being forced to skip school every month just because I couldn’t afford menstrual products. That’s why I decided to take action and help the period poverty crisis in Kenya by starting the charity Project PeriodTalk to spread awareness, help end the shame and stigma around menstruation, and make sure period products are free for all, since no one should be forced to choose between going to school and having their period.
